Your lagna is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth. It becomes the first house of your chart, and all twelve houses are counted from it. Find yours on the Lagna Calculator.
Why the birth time matters so much
The whole zodiac passes over the eastern horizon once in a day, so each of the twelve signs rises for about two hours. That means the lagna changes about every two hours, and near the end of a sign a difference of a few minutes can move you into the next one. Every house, and so every reading by house, shifts with it. This is why a chart made with a rounded birth time can look quite different from the true one.
What the lagna decides
- The twelve houses. The sign of the lagna is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. A planet's result depends on the house it falls in. Phaladeepika (chapter 8) gives the result of each planet in each of the twelve houses.
- Your basic nature. Phaladeepika (chapter 9) describes the person born under each rising sign.
- The lord of the lagna. The planet that rules your rising sign is read as your chart's main planet, and where it stands matters.
If you do not know your birth time
Without a birth time the lagna cannot be found. The classical way out is to count the houses from the Moon instead (the Chandra Lagna), and the Moon sign needs far less precision than the lagna because the Moon stays in a sign for more than two days. जन्म समय इतना ज़रूरी क्यों है
पूरा राशिचक्र एक दिन में एक बार पूर्वी क्षितिज से गुज़रता है, इसलिए बारह राशियों में से हर एक लगभग दो घण्टे उदय रहती है। अर्थात् लग्न लगभग हर दो घण्टे में बदलता है, और राशि के अन्त के पास कुछ मिनट का अन्तर आपको अगली राशि में पहुँचा सकता है। हर भाव, और इसलिए भाव से हर फल, उसके साथ बदल जाता है। इसीलिए गोल किए गए जन्म समय से बनी कुण्डली सही से काफ़ी अलग दिख सकती है।
लग्न क्या तय करता है
- बारह भाव। लग्न की राशि पहला भाव है, अगली राशि दूसरा, और आगे इसी तरह। ग्रह का फल उसके भाव पर निर्भर है। फलदीपिका (अध्याय 8) बारह भावों में हर ग्रह का फल बताती है।
- आपका मूल स्वभाव। फलदीपिका (अध्याय 9) हर लग्न में जन्मे व्यक्ति का वर्णन करती है।
- लग्नेश। आपकी उदय राशि का स्वामी ग्रह कुण्डली का मुख्य ग्रह माना जाता है, और वह कहाँ है यह मायने रखता है।
जन्म समय पता न हो तो
जन्म समय के बिना लग्न नहीं निकलता। शास्त्रीय उपाय है भाव चन्द्रमा से गिनना (चन्द्र लग्न), और चन्द्र राशि को लग्न से बहुत कम सटीकता चाहिए क्योंकि चन्द्रमा एक राशि में दो दिन से अधिक रहता है। राशि कैलकुलेटर आज़माएँ, या जन्म कुण्डली पर कुण्डली बनाएँ और "मुझे जन्म समय नहीं पता" पर निशान लगाएँ। हो सके तो जन्म प्रमाणपत्र या अस्पताल के रिकॉर्ड में लिखा समय परिवार से पूछ लें।
