Sade Sati is the time when Saturn passes through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Saturn stays about two and a half years in each sign, so the three signs add up to about seven and a half years. You can see your own dates on the Sade Sati Calculator.
How to know if you are in it
First find your Moon sign on the Rashi Calculator. Then look at where Saturn is now. If Saturn is in the sign just before yours (the 12th from your Moon), in your sign (the 1st), or in the sign just after (the 2nd), you are in Sade Sati. Because Saturn sometimes turns backwards for a few months, it can step back into the earlier sign and a phase can appear twice.
What the classical books say
The word "Sade Sati" and the seven-and-a-half-year grouping come from later tradition. What the older books give is the result of Saturn's passage through each house counted from the Moon, which is the same method used for the daily reading. For the three houses involved, Phaladeepika (chapter 26) says in plain terms:
- Saturn in the 12th from the Moon: fruitless work, money lost to opponents and illness in the family.
- Saturn in the 1st (over the Moon): illness and a heavy, serious mood.
- Saturn in the 2nd: loss of wealth and trouble for children.
For comparison, the same chapter calls Saturn's passage through the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses good: a position or job, happiness on all sides, wealth and honour. Prasna Marga (chapter 22) adds that a favourable position can be cancelled by an obstructing planet (Vedha), so the whole picture matters.
How to read this sensibly
These lines describe tendencies and are weighed with the rest of your chart: the strength of Saturn, your running dasha and the other planets. Many people pass through Sade Sati steadily, and the same books call Saturn's passage through the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses good, so Saturn is not only a planet of difficulty.

पहले राशि कैलकुलेटर पर अपनी चन्द्र राशि जानें। फिर देखें कि शनि अभी कहाँ है। यदि शनि आपकी राशि से ठीक पहले की राशि (चन्द्रमा से बारहवीं), आपकी अपनी राशि (पहली) या उसके बाद की राशि (दूसरी) में है, तो आप साढ़ेसाती में हैं। शनि कभी-कभी कुछ महीनों के लिए वक्री होता है, इसलिए वह पिछली राशि में लौट सकता है और कोई चरण दो बार दिख सकता है।

"साढ़ेसाती" शब्द और साढ़े सात वर्ष का समूह बाद की परम्परा से है। पुराने ग्रन्थ चन्द्रमा से गिने हर भाव में शनि के गोचर का फल बताते हैं, जो वही पद्धति है जिससे दैनिक फल बनता है। इन तीन भावों के लिए फलदीपिका (अध्याय 26) सरल शब्दों में कहती है:
- चन्द्रमा से बारहवें भाव में शनि: निष्फल कार्य, शत्रुओं द्वारा धन हरण और परिवार में रोग।
- पहले भाव में (चन्द्रमा के ऊपर): रोग और भारी, गम्भीर मनोदशा।
- दूसरे भाव में: धन हानि और सन्तान के लिए कष्ट।
तुलना के लिए, उसी अध्याय में शनि का तीसरे, छठे और ग्यारहवें भाव से गोचर शुभ कहा है: पद या नौकरी, सब ओर सुख, धन और सम्मान। प्रश्नमार्ग (अध्याय 22) जोड़ता है कि अनुकूल स्थिति को बाधक ग्रह (वेध) काट सकता है, इसलिए पूरी तस्वीर देखना ज़रूरी है।
