You have Mangal Dosh (also called Manglik or Kuja Dosha) when Mars stands in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of your birth chart. The houses are counted from the Lagna, so you need your birth time; the Mangal Dosh Calculator does the counting for you.
The verse behind the rule
Sarvartha Chintamani quotes the rule in one line: lagne vyaye cha patale jamitre chashtame kujah. It means Mars in the Lagna (1st), the Vyaya (12th), the Patala (4th), the Jamitra (7th) and the Ashtama (8th). The book uses it while discussing how Mars and Ketu together can affect the partner.
What the books say about Mars and marriage
The reason the 7th house matters is that it is the house of the spouse. Prasna Marga (chapter 20) warns that Mars in the 7th can bring separation or hardship in marriage, and Phaladeepika (chapter 11) warns about malefic planets in the 7th, 8th and 2nd houses. These are warnings about tendencies, not fixed outcomes.
How to read it sensibly
- It is one factor among many. The strength and sign of Mars, the 7th house and its lord, and aspects from other planets all change the picture.
- Both charts matter. In marriage matching, the Mars check is part of the whole comparison of the two charts, not a separate verdict. The Kundli Milan page checks it for both people.
- No birth time? Without it the Lagna is unknown, so the calculator counts the houses from the Moon, a classical alternative.

मंगल और विवाह के बारे में ग्रन्थ क्या कहते हैं
सातवाँ भाव इसलिए मायने रखता है कि वह जीवनसाथी का भाव है। प्रश्नमार्ग (अध्याय 20) चेताता है कि सप्तम में मंगल विवाह में बिछोह या कठिनाई ला सकता है, और फलदीपिका (अध्याय 11) सप्तम, अष्टम और द्वितीय भाव में पाप ग्रहों के बारे में चेताती है। ये प्रवृत्तियों की चेतावनियाँ हैं, निश्चित परिणाम नहीं।

- दोनों कुण्डलियाँ मायने रखती हैं। विवाह मिलान में मंगल की जाँच दोनों कुण्डलियों की पूरी तुलना का हिस्सा है, अलग निर्णय नहीं। कुण्डली मिलान पृष्ठ दोनों के लिए इसे जाँचता है।
- जन्म समय नहीं पता? उसके बिना लग्न अज्ञात है, इसलिए कैलकुलेटर भाव चन्द्रमा से गिनता है, जो शास्त्रीय विकल्प है।
