A nakshatra is one of the 27 lunar stars that the zodiac is divided into, each 13°20′ wide. Your janma nakshatra, or birth star, is the one the Moon was in when you were born. Enter your birth details on the Nakshatra Calculator to find yours.
How the 27 stars are arranged
The 360° of the zodiac divided by 27 gives 13°20′ for each star, and each star is split into four padas (quarters) of 3°20′. Four padas times 27 stars gives 108 padas, and nine padas fill exactly one sign. The first star is Ashwini and the last is Revati. What your birth star is used for
- Your first dasha. The nine planets rule the 27 stars in turn, repeating three times. The lord of your birth star starts your Vimshottari dasha, reduced by the part of the star the Moon had already crossed (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 46). See your periods on the Dasha Calculator.
- Marriage matching. Prasna Marga (chapter 21) groups the stars by gana (divine, human, demoniac), yoni (an animal), varna and element, and uses these to compare two people.
- What each star governs. Brihat Samhita (chapter 15) lists the people and things each nakshatra rules, for example which star is linked with horse-traders and commanders, and which with priests and astrologers.
Finding yours
The Moon moves about 13° a day, so it spends roughly a day in each star. That makes the birth time important: on the day the Moon changes star, the time decides which one is yours.
