Vimshottari Dasha Explained: How to Find Your Running Dasha and What Each Planet Brings

Ganesha on a lotus with the title Vimshottari dasha explained

Your dasha is the planetary period you are living in. In the Vimshottari system the cycle lasts 120 years and is divided among nine planets; the first period is ruled by the lord of your birth star. Find your running dasha on the Dasha Calculator.

How the cycle works

The nine periods follow a fixed order, with these lengths in years:

Planet Years
Sun 6
Moon 10
Mars 7
Rahu 18
Jupiter 16
Saturn 19
Mercury 17
Ketu 7
Venus 20

Together they make 120 years. Your own cycle begins with the lord of your birth star (find it on the Nakshatra Calculator), but only the part of that period the Moon had not yet used up at birth remains. After it the next planets follow in the order above (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 46). Each main period (mahadasha) is split into sub-periods (antardasha) of all nine planets, in proportion to their years.

What each planet's period brings

Phaladeepika (chapter 19) gives the general result of each planet's dasha:

  • Sun: wealth through bold action, travel and those in power; fame and success in business.
  • Moon: peace of mind and success in work, with a strength that follows the Moon's phase at birth.
  • Mars: gains through land, fire, rulers and contests, but also fevers and quarrels in the family.
  • Mercury: personal comforts, fame through the learned, favour of elders and happiness at home.
  • Jupiter: virtuous deeds, children, honour from rulers and wishes fulfilled.
  • Venus: pleasures and comforts, vehicles, ornaments and travel.
  • Saturn: ailments of wind, losses in farming, helpers leaving and time away from home.
  • Rahu: trouble from authority and failed ventures, though fully auspicious with a benefic in good houses.
  • Ketu: displeasure of authority, wounds, heat illnesses and time away from home.

How to read it sensibly

Phaladeepika (chapter 20) adds that a planet gives its full result when it is strong, meaning in its own or exalted sign, friendly, or retrograde, and a weaker one when it is debilitated, in an enemy sign, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. The house the planet rules also colours its period. So the lines above are starting points; read them with your chart on Janam Kundli.
