How to Read Your Kundli: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Ganesha on a lotus with the title How to read your kundli

You read a kundli in this order: the lagna (rising sign), the Moon sign and birth star, the houses and the planets in them, the aspects between planets, the running dasha, and last the yogas. Do not start with the yogas; they only make sense once the first five are clear. If you do not have a chart yet, make one free on Janam Kundli.

Step 1: Find your lagna

The lagna is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. It is the first house, and every other house is counted from it. Because it changes about every two hours, the birth time matters. Phaladeepika (chapter 9) gives the nature of each rising sign. You can find yours on the Lagna Calculator.

Step 2: Find your Moon sign and birth star

The Moon sign (rashi) is the sign the Moon was in at your birth, and the nakshatra is the star the Moon was in. In Vedic astrology the Moon sign matters as much as the lagna: it shows the mind, and daily forecasts are read from it. Saravali (chapter 23) describes the Moon in each sign. See the Rashi Calculator and the Nakshatra Calculator.

Step 3: Count the twelve houses

Starting with the lagna as the first house, count the signs one by one to the twelfth. Write down which planets sit in which house. The first, fourth, seventh and tenth are the kendras (the corners), and the first, fifth and ninth are the trikonas (the trines); planets there are generally supportive. Phaladeepika (chapter 8) gives the result of each planet in each of the twelve houses.

Step 4: Check which planets look at which

All planets look at the house opposite them, the seventh. Mars also looks at the fourth and eighth, Jupiter at the fifth and ninth, and Saturn at the third and tenth (Brihat Jataka, chapter 2). A planet's result changes with the planets that look at it.

Step 5: Read the running dasha

The dasha tells you which planet's period you are living in. The most used system, Vimshottari, runs for 120 years: Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7 and Venus 20 years. The first period is set by the lord of your birth star (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 46). Find your current period on the Dasha Calculator.

Step 6: Look for yogas

A yoga is a combination of planets that the books say gives a particular result. A simple example is a planet that owns both a kendra and a trikona house, called a Yogakaraka, which is said to support prosperity in its periods.

Step 7: Weigh everything together

No single line decides anything. The books describe tendencies, and they are weighed together: the lagna, the Moon, the planet's strength, its aspects and the running dasha. If one reading looks very good and another looks hard, the result is usually in between.
