How to Read Today's Panchang: Tithi, Nakshatra, Karana and the Good and Bad Times of the Dayआज का पंचांग कैसे पढ़ें: तिथि, नक्षत्र, करण और दिन के शुभ-अशुभ समय

A panchang ("five limbs") lists the facts of the day from the Sun and Moon: the tithi, the weekday (vara), the nakshatra and the karana, among others. Today's values for your city, with the time each one ends, are on Aaj Ka Panchang.
The limbs of the day
- Tithi. The lunar day. It is the angle between the Moon and the Sun in steps of 12°, so there are 30 tithis in a lunar month: 15 in the bright half (Shukla paksha) ending at Purnima, and 15 in the dark half (Krishna paksha) ending at Amavasya. A tithi can begin or end at any hour, and the day is named by the tithi at sunrise.
- Vara. The weekday, ruled by its planet.
- Nakshatra. The star the Moon is in. Brihat Samhita (chapter 15) lists what each governs.
- Karana. Half a tithi. Seven karanas (Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija and Vishti) repeat through the month and four fixed ones close it (Phaladeepika, chapter 12). Vishti, also called Bhadra, is the one avoided for new work.
Good and bad times of the day
Muhurta Chintamani (chapter 1) gives signs that help you choose a time:
- Ravi Yoga and Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga are favourable: the first depends on how far the Moon's star is from the Sun's, the second on the weekday and star together.
- Kulika, Kalavela, Yamaghanta and Kantaka are inauspicious stretches of the daytime, each one sixteenth of the time from sunrise to sunset, and their positions depend on the weekday. The book says they do not spoil the night.
- Bhadra (Vishti) is to be avoided for beginning auspicious work.
The panchang page works these out for the city you choose, using its real sunrise and sunset. If you need a time for something important, check it there and, where it matters, with a family priest.
